UK Gambling Commission has turned to an independent organization called, the Gambling Research Exchange (GREO), for support. In a rather unexpected move, GREO was given a key role in…
…the new national effort to combat the harms associated with gambling. The inclusion of an independent entity has raised a few eyebrows, however, the decision to do so is more than reasonable.
Expertise and Research Dissemination:
One of the main reasons why GREO was included in the new strategy…
… and given such an important role, is their experience. This organization has built a strong reputation as an independent, unbiased entity that specializes in research dissemination.
The United Kingdom Gambling Commission has employed GERO to help them on two separate fronts. The first one being Prevention and Education, while the other includes Treatment and Support.
These are the two main goals of the National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms that is to be implemented along with strict regulation of online casinos and gambling space.
GERO will be tasked with crucial roles related to research as well as…
… collaboration with international entities such as the United States regulatory bodies and other European agencies of similar type.
Furthermore, they will be tasked with applying the research to the policy when and where appropriate.
Trudy Smit Quosai from GREO said: “We are thrilled to announce our work as part of the National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms. It means we will be working with the best thinkers around the world to help tackle the issue and provide independent, evidence-based research to support the strategy’s priorities.”
On the other side of the table, Tim Miller, Executive Director at Gambling Commission added: “The new role for GREO to support the National Strategy is a perfect example of the collaboration we called for in the Strategy. GREO is a well-respected independent research organization with a wealth of experience in gambling research and dissemination. Ultimately, their expertise, networks and insight will help us and our partners to accelerate progress over the next three years.”
Both the UKGC and GREO are looking forward to the prolonged cooperation and a continued partnership. Many are seeing this collaboration as a potentially fruitful one that…
… could offer a detailed insight into the intricacies of gambling related issues. GREO has proven itself in the past as a reliable source of proven information. Especially when it comes down to credible research.
We are left to see where this joint effort will go in the near future.
What is National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms:
It serves as a three-year plan developed by the UK Gambling Commission in an effort to…
… combat the negative side of gambling. They have employed a number of independent organizations, charities, and businesses.
The plan is to continue with tight regulation of the market, all while supporting new research into harm prevention. It is supposed to be a multi-pronged effort…
… which is expected to yield results in the near future. Additionally, the commission is hoping to see a unified national institution specialized in treatment and support of those in need.
