Addiction almost always causes problems. Steven Girling, a finance boss had first-hand experience with it. Recently, he stole £1 million from his company due to his online gambling addiction.
How Things Got Started?
He pleaded guilty at Norwich Crown Court on Monday, claiming that he did take that huge amount of money from the firm he has worked for as a chief finance officer. All of this occurred more than four years ago.
From March 2014 up to October last year, he has transferred money from the account of that company directly to his own. So, what happened then? He wasted it on online video slots.
He was spending approximately £18,000 per night! This lavish behavior led to receiving a VIP treatment in three betting corporations he used. His exclusive treatment included on luxurious trips to watch horse racing in Cheltenham, Dubai and Ascot.
What Does He Think Of It Now?
Mr. Girling has completely transformed himself in the past year and he claims that he is clean now. He is working as a life coach and he wants to educate others about gambling and the addiction it could potentially cause.
In January, he will go to jail, however, that will not stop him from pursuing his goals. He is planning on opening a retreat center in Norfolk where he would be able to transfer his experience and knowledge regarding this subject.
Mr. Girling commented on this topic by saying:
“I am ashamed, but I want to use this negative part of my life to try and help others so they don’t have to suffer the pain I have put other people through. I turned to gambling because I liked the fact I could do it on my phone on my own and it was my way of shutting myself away from my everyday life and my worries. “
He was hiding this from everyone, because deep down, he knew he didn’t want to quit it. Four years ago, he had his first major win and that was the trigger.
He claims that as soon as you get your first win, your brain releases dopamine which affects your rational judgement. You suddenly feel like you simply must go back and continue playing.
In the beginning, Girling was financing his addiction from his own pocket until he was no longer able to do that.
A Good Ending After All:
This man believes that he can look forward to a brighter future and luckily, his wife Rashael and his kids Henry and Izzy are there to support him in every possible way.
Furthermore, he has spoken to one of the most competent institutions when it comes to this subject, UKGC about reducing and stopping addiction.
